• Vince Cicciarelli scores three goals against Dunlap
• Regional pairings posted
Peoria Notre Dame junior Vince Cicciarelli scored three goals and had two assists in a 7-0 win over Dunlap last week.
The offensive explosion against a very good Dunlap team was no surprise to ND coach Mike Bare, who said it was only a mater of time before Cicciarelli had a game like that one.
“Earlier this season, I think he was trying to do too much by himself,” Bare said. “We’ve been trying to get him to trust his teammates. He did that against Dunlap. He made some nice passes, which allowed him to get the ball back for scoring opportunities.”
Bare said Cicciarelli, who played for the elite St. Louis Scott Gallagher Metro Academy club team this summer, has the size, speed and “raw talent” to be one of the top players ever to play at ND.
“He knows the areas he needs to work on,” Bare said. “But, he has progressed tremendously this season. He’s very good in those one on one situations. He’s doing a great job beating the defender and getting good shots.”
Notre Dame beat St. Viator, 3-2, Saturday to win the Mid-State Classic.
Cicciarelli scored two goals and Cody Gilfillan added another for the Irish (12-2-1).
Sebastian Geoffroy scored two goals to lead Richwoods to 3-1 win over Woodruff Sept. 29. Dylan Wiltz scored a goal and had an assist for the Knights, who host East Moline tomorrow at 4:30 p.m.
Dunlap rebounded from the lopsided loss to Notre Dame by winning two Mid-Illini Conference games last week.
Derek Mills scored two goals and Dan Merriman made six saves in a 3-0 win over Washington Thursday. Tyler Bettenhausen also scored for the Eagles. Jacob Abou-Hanna and Eric Mauser had assists. Ian Liszewski scored on an assist from Evan Landmark to lead Dunlap to a 1-0 win over Metamora Sept. 29.
Dunlap tied Racine (Wisc.) Horlick, 2-2, Friday in the Quincy Tournament. Mills and Mauser each scored a goal for the Eagles (8-4-3). Abou-Hanna and Kieran Lynch had assists.
