Peoria Municipal Band Concerts: Wednesday, July 25, Friday, July 27 and Sunday, July 29.
This week you will be celebrating “Circus Days” on Wednesday as you are sitting on Water Street in the Warehouse District near Kelleher’s Irish Pub and Eatery. St. Philomena’s Church in Peoria will be the site for the Friday, July 27 concert. Then Sunday we are back at “home” in Glen Oak Park as we offer “Tip, Top, Tango” as we welcome some more dancing couples. Join us any or all of these concerts to spend a wonderful, relaxing family evening and listening to the music of the Peoria Municipal Band. The band is celebrating its Diamond Anniversary, 75 years of great music being played throughout the Peoria area. Plus there will be a drawing at every concert for a special prize at the conclusion of the season. All concerts begin at 7 p.m.
Wednesday night in the Warehouse District, music for the evening will have the excitement of “Circus Days”. So it will be a “Main Street Celebration” that will open this concert. Other selections to get us in the mood will include: “Circus Days”, “March Grandioso”, “A Mancini Medley” and “George Gershwin, A Symphonic Portrait”. In addition, you’ll hear several marches and other familiar tunes. Bring lawn chairs or sit at the tables and chairs provided by Kelleher’s. You never know when a diesel locomotive or maybe even a circus train will come through!
Join us Friday, July 27 at St. Philomena’s Church for an “Out and About” concert. This is a great area for hearing great band music in another park like setting. You do need to bring lawn chairs.
Sunday night the band the band will be following Dr. Vroman with”Tip, Top, Tango”. Since is it Olympics time, the band will open the concert with “Olympic Fanfare and Theme” before getting into the tango music. That will include; “Blue Tango”, Tango for Band!”, and “The Broadway Tango”. Bring your dancing shoes and join in the fun.
Leigh Weideman will be our featured vocal soloist while Laurel Filzen will be the instrumental soloist on French horn. They will be performing at both concerts.
The Peoria Municipal Band was formed in 1937 through the efforts of Local 26 of the American Federation of Musicians and interested citizens. Prior to 1937 the band was a professional municipal band complete with management and "Soloists of National Reputation". Current band members come from all walks of life; many are currently music teachers in the local schools. They are selected by audition and then commit to a full season of rehearsals and performance. Hundreds of thousands of people have enjoyed their music since 1937. Today, with the support of the city, the band continues the long-standing tradition of excellence in music.
