One of Hollywood’s top dancers teamed up with one of the movies’ best directors of musicals to create “Royal Wedding,” showing on Aug. 25 at downtown Peoria’s nonprofit Apollo Theater.
Fred Astaire stars in the 1951 film, about a brother/sister dance act that goes to England for Elizabeth’s wedding but separately find romance. It’s most famous scene may be Astaire’s innovative choreography for his dancing on walls and the ceiling.
Nominated for an Oscar for the song “Too Late Now,” the 93-minute gem was directed by Stanley Donen, who previously directed “On The Town” (1949) and in 1952 would helm “Singin’ in the Rain.”
“Royal Wedding” was written by veteran lyricist Alan Jay Lerner – his first screenplay – and co-stars Jane Powell, Peter Lawford, Keenan Wynn and Sarah Churchill.
Show times at the Apollo are at 7 p.m. Donations are $5 and $4 for kids, students and seniors. For details call (309) 673-4343.
