Metamora's boys' basketball team dropped the Mid-Illini Conference opener to Canton, 79-82, on the road in overtime.
Canton took a quick 14-11 lead after the opening quarter.
David Gualandri charged Metamora's offense in the second quarter with tough shots over opponents and smart passes to give his teammates plenty of chances to score.
Gualandri finished the game with 20 points.
At halftime, Canton led, 36-32.
The Redbird offense awoke after the half for the best quarter it would have all game.
Possession after possession, Metamora knocked down shots all over the court with scores from the perimeter and under the hoop alike.
Mike Martin tore through the Little Giant defense to take the ball to the hoop to score tough baskets over Canton defenders.
Martin led the team with 25 points.
In the fourth quarter, Canton regained its offensive footing and tied the game.
In overtime, neither team's offense looked stellar but Canton found a way to score three more points to close out Metamora's first Mid-Illini loss.
The team then racked up a 68-55 win over Galesburg at home Saturday.
Both sides traded scores and leads throughout the opening quarter before Metamora's offense found a rhythm in the second quarter with a 17-8 run.
Gualandri seemed to be all over the court during the game, racking up shot after shot over defenders to lead the team with 14 points.
Throughout the second half, Metamora's offense remained hyper-focused and never let up thanks to another solid team game from Martin.
The Redbirds cruised to a win.
The team next plays at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Dunlap.
