Carrie Bradshaw finally had the perfect life - that is, as long as she was able to keep her suburban teenager/glamorous career gal personas separate. But during Monday's episode of The Carrie Diaries, her two worlds collided and the lies came to an end.
Ditching her high school life in Connecticut to celebrate closing her first issue as an intern at Interview, Carrie (AnnaSophia Robb) accidentally ran into her father Tom (Matt Letscher) at a New York club, where he revealed her true identity (and age!) to her employer Larissa (Freeman Agyeman). Although her new boss was totally being OK with the revelation, Tom banned little Bradshaw from New York. Naturally, that won't last very long since Manhattan is destined to become Carrie's main stomping grounds. But how will she get back? TVGuide.com turned to executive producer Amy B. Harris to get the scoop on that, Carrie and Sebastian's (Austin Butler) budding romance and the most jaw-dropping kiss this season... Donna (Chloe Bridges) and Walt (Brendan Dooling)?!
The Carrie Diaries: When will Carrie lose her virginity?
Carrie's dad is trying to prevent her from going to New York again. How will she get around that? Amy B. Harris: I never felt like the premise of the show could be Carrie hiding a new life. That was a good story for us as she was building this relationship with Larissa, but we knew once she took the job at Interview, realistically, it would just blow up in her face. Of course, it did! There's some surprising twists that will come quickly that allow her to go back to New York. New York's a big part of her life, and I think the way she ends up going back to New York is quite surprising.
Page 2 of 4 - Will she be back at Interview or at the law firm? Harris: We will see her fulfill her own dreams vs. her father's.
How might Larissa be able to help in getting Carrie back to her job? Harris: Larissa is somebody who picked Carrie out of obscurity in a way, and has been incredibly impressed with her throughout, so I like to think of Larissa as the Id mother figure vs. the true mother figure. I really think she sees Carrie for who she could be. That's a wonderful person to have in your life. I sort of wish I had that growing up. If anything, she's my greatest fantasy in this show, that you could have someone who believes in you so much when you're at that age. Larissa will definitely be very much a part of that for the rest of the season.
It seems like Carrie and Sebastian are on the way to getting together. Harris: Yes. I think for someone like Carrie Bradshaw, relationships and deep feelings bring out a lot of fear and complications for her. I don't think, for Carrie, it's ever smooth sailing when it comes to loving relationships. There's a deep chemistry between the two of them, but it's complicated. That's similar to Sex and the City. That's the relationship stuff I love to dig into. Once you jump into relationships, they become these static things, but the reality is you're always you dealing with your own stuff, but you bring that into the relationship and that's very much Carrie's dysfunction. The journey of she and Sebastian is a really big part of the season.
Ratings woes won't rush Carrie Diaries story lines, says Amy B. Harris
How do you feel about writing towards this couple when you know this isn't the end game? Harris: For me, I'm writing this as if I don't totally know what comes after it. The truth is, when you're in high school or college, every relationship feels like it's important. I remember being a freshman in college and having my heart broken and crying and feeling like I would never recover and never find love again. It's completely real while you're experiencing it. On the one side, I have to write towards this deep chemistry that she and Sebastian have, and on the other side, knowing how hard it is for her to love as an adult; that's the fun of figuring out how these relationships contributed to that. It actually adds some fun layering for me. Her mom died and there's a sense of abandonment, but there's also other things that have happened to her that have given her a fear of certain types of relationships.
Page 3 of 4 - Donna and Walt?! Why bring them together? Harris: Donna is the ultimate beard for Walt, and a good person to hide behind. But Donna being a very different person than Maggie (Katie Findlay) will help him come to some conclusions faster. How that plays out is complicated.
How hurt will Maggie be over this? Harris: Pretty crushed. Maggie is the opposite side of the Samantha coin, which is that she is really using sex as a way to feel loved and to feel intimacy and it all blew up in her face. For her, it's going to be a very challenging few episodes. Maggie will struggle. Maggie is a tough cookie on the outside, with lots of pithy, funny things to say, but the reality is, she's pretty fragile.
    Which shows should die?
Now that Walt knows the truth about Maggie, how will that affect the group dynamic? Harris: It's going to be rough. Adding in the Donna element of it is going to make it super complicated. What I love about Carrie is that she's not judgmental. I think she understands from her conversations with Walt and with Maggie, that was not a happy relationship. There was a lot going on under the surface that neither one of them was willing to admit. She and Mouse (Ellen Wong) want to be good friends to both of them, but it's going to put a big strain on that. There will be some surprising twists with how that works out.
Stay tuned for more Carrie Diaries scoop on Walt's exploration of his sexuality and a new love interest for Mouse.
The Carrie Diaries airs Mondays at 8/7c on The CW.
