  • Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina was named the new pope today. Here are five things to know about him.
    1. He has taken the name Francis. He is the first Pope Francis in the history of the church.
    2. He is the first South American pope and the first non-European pope since Gregory III in the eighth century, who was from Syria.

    3. Pope Francis was born Dec. 17, 1936, (age 76) in Buenos Aires.
    4. He is a Jesuit, and the first Jesuit priest to be elected pope.
    5. He was ordained as a priest in 1969 and elevated to the position of cardinal in 2001 by John Paul II.
