The Peoria chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union meeting April 25 will feature Kyle E. Ciani, an Illinois State University associate history professor and women’s and gender studies core faculty member.
She will speak on “Problematic Choices: A Short History of Reproductive Rights in the United States.”
The event will be at the IVY Club, 1502 N. Galena Road, Peoria Heights, and begins with a social hour at 5:30 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. The program, presentation of awards and election of officers will follow.
Ciani specializes in the history of women and gender across the Americas, with a focus on social justice issues. As an ISU affiliated faculty in women’s and gender studies, her courses are part of the program’s core curriculum and she helps to mentor the Feminist Led Activist Movement to Empower.
She has appeared on C-Span and other national media outlets on women’s issues. She formerly was associate director of the Child Abuse Prevention Foundation of San Diego County, Calif., and is knowledgeable about the long-term effects of domestic violence.
The Sam Belfer Award will be presented to Peoria Journal Star reporter Matt Buedel and to voter activist Helen King.
