  • For family fun and fitness, sign up for the 24th annual Carolyn Mannlein Memorial Family House Run/Walk at 8 a.m. June 8 at The Clubs at River City.
     
    Runners and walkers of all ages and ability levels are invited to participate in this Illinois Valley Striders Grand Prix sponsored 5k run/walk, 1-mile fitness walk and Children’s Fun Run.
     
    The 5k run/walk and one-mile fitness walk begin at 8 a.m. Early registration fee is $25.
     
    After June 1, registration is $30. The Children’s Fun Run begins at 9 a.m. and costs $10. Race day registration is from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. at The Clubs at River City, 8603 N. University St. Parking is available at the recreation complex.
     
    Refreshments, with pizza provided by Nick-N-Willy’s, will be available after the race. There will also be an awards ceremony, with trophies given to the top finishers in each division.
     
    To register online, go to familyhouse.webconnex.com/race/2013 or print off an entry form at familyhousepeoria.org and mail it in with your registration fee.
     
    Held in memory of Carolyn Mannlein, a dedicated Family House volunteer who gave freely of her time and expertise, the race attracts nearly 400 participants each year from central Illinois. Mannlein is credited for developing a financial system and coordinating volunteers during the first years of Family House.
     
    Family House offers a “home away from home” for patients’ families receiving medical and nursing care in Peoria. Located at 1339 E. Nebraska Ave., not far from OSF Saint Francis Medical Center and Methodist Medical Center, the house provides all families, who may have a hospitalized loved one in the Peoria area, low-cost temporary lodging and other supportive services.
     
    Since opening its doors in 1985, Family House has provided more than 30,000 people shelter, comfort and a sense of community, which would not have been found elsewhere. Family House is a not-for-profit organization. Its foundation is built upon the generosity of philanthropic businesses, foundations and individuals through the donation of time, talents and financial support.
