PEKIN — Bernadine “Bernie” A. Smith, 84, of Pekin, formerly of East Peoria, died at 2:45 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13, 2013, at Pekin Manor, Pekin.
Born Nov. 7, 1928, in Peoria to John Orville and Bernadine Marie Pitsch Flanagan, she married Charles E. Smith Aug. 4, 1951, in Peoria; he survives.
Also surviving is a son, Scott (Dianne) Smith of Pekin; daughter, Kathy (Greg) Hendrickson of Lindenhurst; two granddaughters; one great-granddaughter; brother, Roland (Beverly) Flanagan of Morton; sister, Joan (Max) Cheatham of East Peoria; one step-granddaughter; and two step-great-grandsons.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Richard Flanagan and John “Jack” Flanagan; and sisters, Colleen Masters and Arlene Flanagan.
She retired from the accounting department at Pekin Hospital, where she worked for many years.
After her retirement, she volunteered with the American Cancer Society’s Reach to Recovery Program and the American Red Cross. She was a member of St. Monica’s Catholic Church, East Peoria, where she was a member of the Ladies’ Guild and Bible study.
Funeral Mass was Oct. 17 at St. Monica’s Catholic Church, East Peoria. Visitation preceded services at the church. Interment was in Fondulac Cemetery, East Peoria.
