PEORIA — Peoria residents will have one more opportunity for their yard waste to be hauled away this year. With an emphasis on "one."
From Monday through Dec. 13, Peoria Disposal Co. customers can set out gathered leaves and associated items on normal garbage-collection days.
Yard-waste collection usually ends Nov. 30. But according to city officials, the lateness of the Thanksgiving holiday this year, cold weather prior to it and warm temperatures last weekend prompted an extension.
So did telephone calls from residents.
"We've been getting inundated," City Manager Patrick Urich said Wednesday.
PDC spokesman Eric Shangraw said his firm received a similar inundation.
"If the trees lost their leaves a little earlier and it had been cold last weekend, this wouldn't have been an issue," he said. "But it just didn't work out like that."
The city contract with PDC for yard-waste collection runs from April 1 through Nov. 30, Urich said. He stressed the collections next week will be a one-time deal.
"It's beyond the scope of our contract," Urich said. "It'll be an additional cost for the city to do this."
That cost is likely to be between $50,000 and $75,000, the city manager said.
PDC is to rehire two workers who usually are laid off once yard-waste collection ends, Shangraw said. They are to join seven trucks, each with two-worker crews, that are devoted to yard-waste pickup.
Refuse must be left curbside, in appropriate containers, by 6 a.m. Residents who miss the pickup deadline next week are responsible for transporting yard waste to the LHF Compost Inc. facility in rural Peoria County.
Ramifications for not extending the deadline would have been many, according to Urich.
"If we don't pick it up, are people going to leave it by the curb?" he said. "Are they going to dispose of it in other parts of the city, or are they going to burn it, which is (illegal)?
"There are all sorts of unintended consequences that could come from not extending this for one more week."
Peoria residents who are Peoria Disposal Co. customers can set out yard waste on usual garbage collection days next week. After Dec. 13, yard waste will not be collected again until April 1.
Waste must be set by the curb by 6 a.m. on the appropriate day. Waste must be collected in:
► Garbage cans marked "Yard Waste Only" that do not exceed 45 gallons and do not weigh more than 50 pounds.
► Paper yard-waste bags that do not exceed 30 pounds.
► Bundles that aren't longer than 5 feet nor heavier than 50 pounds.
► Large, 95-gallon wheeled tote carts marked "Yard Waste Only" that are compatible with the lift mechanism on PDC vehicles.
