The Metamora varsity boys basketball team grabbed its first victory in the Macomb-Western Holiday Tournament against Illini West Thursday.
The 50-21 victory for the Redbirds started slow in the first quarter but the momentum grew throughout the game on offense and defense. Metamora held IW to the single digits in scoring for each quarter.
After the first buzzer, Metamora was ahead 6-2 from Nate Kennell’s two 3-pointers.
Scoring in the second quarter started with a layup by Grant Billimack in the first five seconds and
Nate put in another three 1:20 in with an assist by brother Joe Kennell.
At 11-6, after IW’s Braden Bennetter put in a jump shot, Metamora went on a seven-point run to boost the lead.
The Redbirds continued to put the points up on the board before halftime to spread the margin to 17 at 27-10. Nate contributed another two of his five 3-pointers of the game before the second quarter buzzer.
In the third quarter, Metamora put up another 14 points. Seven were contributed by Billimack from shots at the free-throw line and layups.
Michael Adams closed out the scoring in the third with a layup to make it 41-14.
Opening up the final eight minutes, Metamora was put into bonus from a foul by IW’s Bryor Grotss on Billimack. Billimack put in his free throw shot to start the scoring.
IW put in three free throws before Jordan Dehm put up the Redbirds next points from a 3.
With just under 30 seconds, Zach Hall finished the scoring for the game with a free throw.
Nate led the scoring for the game at 17 points and Billimack followed with 12 of his own.
The Redbirds would then face Camp Point Central in the second round game after its victory over Illini Central, 45-33.
