The Metamora varsity girls basketball team earned its second victory of the season over Pekin, 54-37, Dec. 21. The Lady Redbirds (2-8, 1-3) kept the Dragons (2-9, 0-4) to just eight points apiece in the first and second quarter while putting up 13 of its own in the first and 14 in the second. Heather Deluca put in four 2-pointers in the first quarter and Kim Bahl made three of her four free throw attempts to contribute to the scoring. In the second quarter, Hailey Mueller did the majority of the scoring with a 2-point field goal and made five of her seven free throw attempts. Kara Hartnett added seven points of her own in the first half to help the Lady Redbirds lead 27-16 at halftime. The game-high quarter for scoring came in the third with Metamora putting up an additional 17 points on the board. Mueller sank two 3-pointers and Peyton Roehnelt had a 3 and then two baskets inside the arch. The Dragons were held to just nine points in the third quarter to make it 44-25 going into the final eight minutes. Pekin was able to outscore Metamora, 12-10, in the fourth but it wasn’t enough to edge out a victory. Deluca led the scoring for the Lady Redbirds with 17. She put in six 2-pointers, one 3 and made two of her three free throw attempts. Mueller was second in scoring with 13 points and Hartnett followed with 11 to close out the game.
