The Metamora varsity wrestling team went up against Richwoods and U-High Jan. 14 at home. The Redbirds earned victories over both events. Metamora then competed in the University High Invitational Saturday and wrestled for 8th place. At Home Metamora grabbed a 41-36 victory over the Richwoods Knights. Alec Meronk won with a 2-0 decision in the 106-lbs. division and Ryan Brooks won with a 5-0 decision in 113. Rudy Munter had a pin at 1:40 in the 120 and Lucas Munter earned a pin at 21 seconds in the 138. Kyle White had his pin at 57 seconds in the 145-lbs. division and Matt Rettig won by a 17-0 technical fall. Josh Bernius earned his pin at 1:51 in 170 and Jared Ambrosch had is at 116 in the 182. Metamora earned its 57-16 victory over University High with five pins and by getting points from five U-High forfeits. Meronk pinned his opponent at 27 seconds and Brooks earned his victory with an 8-6 decision. Rudy finished his bout with a pin at 35 seconds for the win. Rettig earned his pin at 1:45. Bernius won with an 8-2 decision and Ambrosch won with a 9-2. At U-High Invitational The Redbird grapplers then headed to U-High for its invitational Saturday and earned 8th place out of the 16 teams present. Metamora had seven wrestlers place in the top-six in their divisions. Brooks earned second place after winning 5-3 in the quarterfinals but lost in a 6-4 decision to Dylan Carey of U-High in the championship round. White earned third place after a 7-2 loss in the quarterfinals but took a win in the third-place round with a 1-0 decision over Cameron Dean of Rich East. Rudy grappled for fourth place after winning by pins in his first two bouts but was disqualified in his quarterfinal match with Nick Ames of Olympia. Meronk, Rettig, Bernius and Kenny Wells all took fifth place in their divisions. Meronk took a 6-5 loss in the semifinals but worked his way up the consolation bracket and won with a pin at 5:10 over Josh Moore of Pontiac. Rettig was pinned in the semifinals at 3:02 but won his fifth-place match with a 9-1 decision over Javen Cobb of Rantoul. Bernius was pinned at 5:07 in the quarterfinals. He won by pins in the first two rounds of the consolation bracket and then won by a 5-4 decision over Deonta Johnson of Clinton in the fifth place match. Wells was pinned with 19 seconds left in his semifinal match but won 30 in his fifth-place match over Dalton Hargrave of Lincoln-Way North. Metamora totalled for 88.5 points for eighth place. Peoria High School won the invite with 170. The wrestling team will be away at Washington Friday but will be at home Saturday with Mahomet, Rantoul, Washington, Normal West and Normal Community.
