  • Wrestlers place fourth at M-I tournament

    The Redbirds placed fourth out of the seven teams with a score of 82 and had one first place position, five wrestlers finish in third and two in fourth place.

  • The Metamora varsity wrestling team travelled to Limestone for the Mid-Illini Conference tournament Saturday. The Redbirds placed fourth out of the seven teams with a score of 82 and had one first place position, five wrestlers finish in third and two in fourth place. Washington took the title at the tournament with 192.5 points. Senior captain Kyle White earned first place in the 138-lbs. division after a 5-3 win in the semifinals and a 7-6 win in the championship title over Ryder Punke of Washington. White’s record moved up to 29-5 for the season. In the 113-lbs. division, Ryan Brooks won with a pin at :22 in his first round but was defeated with a 4-0 decision in the semis. He worked his way up the consolation bracket and won by an 8-0 decision over Nolan Sweeter of Pekin for third place. Caleb Olson received third place in the 120-lbs. division. The light bracket had three wrestlers and after a defeat by Zane Ortega of Pekin, Olson went to the consolation bracket with no other competitors. Lucas Munter earned third place in the 145-lbs. division after a loss to Bryce Sandoval in the semis but won with a 12-2 decision in the consolation to get to the third place match with Kris Clark of Pekin, which he won by pin at 1:10. In the 152-lbs. division, senior captain Matt Rettig grappled for third place. He came up short with a 9-6 defeat in the semis but won by pin at :32 in his first round of the consolation. He defeated Kyle Bieneman of Limestone with an 8-0 decision in the third-place bout. Josh Bernius, in the 170-lbs. division, was the last of the third-place wrestlers. After a 7-3 defeat in the semis he was sent to the consolation and won with a 7-1 decision in the first round and a 3-1 decision in the third-place match over Colton Brown of Washington. In the 182-lbs. division, Jared Ambrosch received fourth place and Jagur Muehe took fourth in the 195-lbs. division. The varsity’s regular season came to an end with the M-I tourney and the team will head to the East Peoria regional Feb. 8.
