Metamora built a double-figure lead in the opening quarter and padded its advantage over the next two in a 68-52 victory over Canton in high school boys basketball on Friday at Alice Ingersoll Gym. Metamora (16-4, 6-2) moved into sole possession of second place in the Mid-Illini Conference. Sophomore Nate Kennell scored 24, senior brother Joe Kennell had 14 points and Grant Billimack scored 13 to lead the Redbirds, who led 21-11 after a quarter and 34-21 at halftime. Joe Kennell and Billimack each had six rebounds to lead a 30-14 advantage for the winners. Canton (9-8, 3-5) got 15 points from Alex Whitehurst and 13 points from Hunter Rhodes. The Little Giants shot 6-for-21 (.280) on 3-pointers. Metamora sank 19 of 30 2-point attempts and shot .530 overall. Billimack had five of a dozen assists for the winners. The victory gives Metamora a regular-season sweep. The Redbirds opened its M-I season with a 67- 36 home win over Canton in early December. Cole Schrodt’s four rebounds led Canton. Both teams will be idle until next Friday, when Canton hosts Limestone and Metamora hosts East Peoria, both in the M-I.
