  • The Metamora wrestling season ended with its action in the Pontiac sectional and coach Steve Schroeder said it was a good year for the team.
“It was a good season. We were pretty solid and straight through the year,” Schroeder said.
The Redbirds finished the season by sending six grapplers to Pontiac after the East Peoria regional.
“I thought we came close on the mat but that’s the way it happens
    sometimes,” Schroeder said.
    “The kids wrestled really well.”
Senior co-captains Matt Rettig and Kyle White advanced with juniors Lucas Munter, Ryan Brooks, Josh Bernius and Jared Ambrosch.
“They all wrestled to their seed or above. You just want to peak at the right time. It was one of the better times to have our best times,” Schroeder said.
The two seniors combined for 62 wins for the season. White finished with 32 and Rettig with 30.
White, in the 138-lbs. division, earned first in three tournaments throughout the season.
His first was at Rockford at the Giardini Varsity Invitational Dec. 7. The next one came from the Metamora Holiday Tournament Dec. 21 and then in the Mid-Illini Conference tourney Feb. 1 to wrap the season up.
White placed second in the East Peoria regional but fell in the second round consolation match at sectionals.
    White made the first-team all-conference.
Rettig, in the 152-lbs. division finished at second place in the Metamora Holiday tourney and earned third place at the Giardini Invite and the Mid-Illini tournament.
Metamora placed fourth in the M-I tournament.
Metamora will have four sectional qualifiers return for next year’s season. Brooks, Munter, Bernius and Ambrosch will be seniors for the 2014-15 season.
“(I’m) looking forward to having them getting back at it next year,” Schroeder said.
Munter led the Redbirds in pins with 15 and Bernius led in takedowns with 80.
“If (Bernius) gets some more mat time in this year he can add a lot to us next year,” Schroeder said.
Brooks led the juniors with 30 wins. Bernius finished with 28, Munter had 22 and Ambrosch finished with 19.
Junior AJ Friedrich was out this season from a shoulder injury. He won his conference title in the 220-lbs. division in the 2012-13 season and Schroeder said he hopes he’ll be back next season to hit the mats.
Page 2 of 2 - Schroeder said he will keep the grapplers going through the summer with a team camp and some practice through the off-season months.
“We’re looking at a team camp right now. Not a lot of the kids travel too much, that’s the way it is, but we’ll find a way to keep it on the mats some how,” Schroeder said.
“They’re all good kids and they were a pleasure to work with. It seemed like the kids worked hard all year and got better every week.”
The Redbirds will have a total of 11 seniors graduate this year.
