  • Time was everything for the Metamora varsity basketball team March 4 in the regional game against Notre Dame, but the seconds ran out and the Irish came out on top, 47-42.
The battle went into overtime after ND tied the game at 39 in the fourth and Metamora was outscored 8-3 in the final four minutes for the loss.
“They hit some big 3’s from guys that normally don’t hit them. Their role players really came through today,” coach Danny Grieves said.
“I tell you what, they made some timely shots.”
Nate Kennell opened the scoring for the game with a 3-pointer from the left corner about 45 seconds into the game.
ND came back with a six-point run before Joe Kennell hit a deep 3 from the top left at the one minute mark to tie it going into the second.
Nate had another 3 to open the second to give Metamora the lead, which lasted to the end of the fourth quarter.
The Redbirds grabbed its game-high lead at the beginning of the third from a layup by Merritt Stott, assisted by Grant Billimack, to make it 20-8.
ND’s Shea Feehan put in his first field goal of the night right after to start the Irish’s come back on Metamora.
A jumper by ND’s Matt Kouri brought the deficit to two points at 22-20.
Metamora outscored ND 9-3 for the remainder of the third.
Josh Dixon closed the third with a layup assisted by Joe with one second left to grab a 31-23 lead.
Within 10 seconds of the fourth, Joe sank a 3 from the right side to widen the gap with the Irish but Notre Dame answered back with three consecutive 3’s.
Joe was sent to the line at 4:27 for Metamora’s first bonus shots, which he made to bring the Redbirds to the 39 mark.
ND added five additional points to the board to tie the game in the final three minutes.
Billimack’s buzzer attempt bounced off the rim to send the game into overtime.
The Irish grabbed its game-lasting lead from two free throw shots by Feehan at 2:20.
Page 2 of 2 - The points from the rest of the game were
from shots at the free-throw line. ND was able to get six to Metamora’s three to secure the win.
Feehan led in scoring for both teams with 20 points. He made all of his free throw attempts.
“Feehan got on track a little bit and he’s an awfully good player. There’s a reason why he’s a leading scorer in the area,” Grieves said.
Nate led Metamora in scoring with 16 points and Joe was next with 14. Dixon followed with seven.
“Our kids gave everything they had, they left everything on the floor and that’s all we can do,” Grieves said.
    Metamora finished its season 21-6.
