Run the Planets this Saturday as the Peoria Riverfront Museum hosts central Illinois runners and walkers of all ages for the 15th annual Interplanetary 5K Race/1 Mile Fitness Walk — an Illinois Valley Striders Grand Prix Race.

The Interplanetary 5K is a family-oriented race event that takes participants through portions of the world's largest solar system model, from the Sun to Mars and back. The flat, no-hill course is set along the Riverfront Trail, from the Gateway Building to Detweiller Marina.

501st Legion Midwest Garrison of Storm Troopers volunteers will be at the race to take pictures and interact with participants. Kids’ Fun Run participants get to be dwarf planets and “orbit” the sun.

Ann Schmitt, Museum programs VP and co-race director, is excited about the weather and said, “Last year was our biggest race to date, and we hope that this year’s race will be even better attended — despite the harsh winter we’ve had. The vernal equinox is this Thursday, and it looks like spring will be making an appearance for this weekend’s race!”

All participants get a moisture-wicking T-shirt; one-day Museum membership pass; refreshments; and coupons for Apple’s Bakery, the Spotted Cow, and a free car wash at Beachler's Service Center. Kids’ Fun Run runners also receive a free Terry the Tractor book, signed by author and race director, Mike Rucker.

Awards will be given to the top 5K men and women overall and top three within each of the 16 age divisions: 7 & under, 8-10, 11-14, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75 & up.  Awards are based on gun-time/chip finish. Certificates will be given to Kids’ Fun Run and 1K Fitness Walk participants.

Pre-race packet pick-up is available from noon-5 p.m. at the museum. Event times: 7:30 - 8:30 a.m. – race-day packet pick-up and registration, 9 a.m. – 5K Race (refreshments following), 9:05 a.m. – 1 Mile Fitness Walk, 9:30 a.m. – Kids' 1/2 Mile Fun Run (awards following).
