  • PEORIA –With the days getting warmer, orange barrels are more common. Several road projects in the Tri-County area will change or slow the commutes of many Peoria-area motorists.
The Illinois Department of Transportation announced Friday that work will resume April 1 on Interstate-74 between Interstate-474 and Interstate-155 in Morton.
Lane closures on eastbound and westbound I-74 can be expected Tuesday through Friday of next week between 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 a.m. These lane closures are necessary for construction of temporary pavement and setting of temporary barrier wall.
The speed limit through the entire work zone will be reduced to 45 mph beginning March 31 and will continue through the construction season. The work zone speed limit is in effect at all hours, whether or not workers are present.
The overall project is the complete reconstruction of I-74 from Pleasant Hill Road to Morton Avenue in Tazewell County. The project is expected to be completed in 2015.
    Illinois Route 40
IDOT said that the southbound right lane of Illinois Route 40 (Knoxville Avenue) at Nebraska Avenue in Peoria will be closed March 31-April 4.
This lane closure is necessary for utility crews to complete sanitary sewer repair work.
    Illinois Route 116
Road work will continue on Illinois Route 116 over Ten Mile Creek in Tazewell County. IDOT officials said the project schedule for the next week will be:
March 31  — The left lane of both directions of IL 116 will be closed (both westbound lanes will be open between before 8:30 a.m.; both eastbound lanes will be open after 3:30 p.m.) Crews will be completing dirt work for drainage in the median.
April 1 — The left lane of westbound IL 116 will be closed. Crews will be installing guardrail.
April 2 — Intermittent lane closures are scheduled in the westbound lanes of IL 116. Crews will be completing striping work.
April 3— The right lane of both directions of IL 116 will be closed. Crews will be installing concrete barrier wall. Traffic will be shifted into a long-term configuration while the project is completed. Eastbound traffic will utilize a temporary crossover lane, then one lane of the westbound bridge over Ten Mile Creek, then will be redirected back to the eastbound lanes.
