  • The Metamora varsity tennis team hosted its Red and White Invitational at the Clubs at River City in Peoria Saturday.

  • The Metamora varsity tennis team hosted its Red and White Invitational at the Clubs at River City in Peoria Saturday.
    Metamora won the championship with a 3-2 win in the title matches.
    “We invited seven quality teams. There was some pretty intense competition and we came out on top and it was a good start,” coach Kelly Willard said.
    In the quarterfinals, Metamora trumped Teutopolis, 5-0.
    William Koehrsen only gave up one set in his first match to win, 6-0, 6-1 in the singles matches.
    Mitchell Nguyen won his singles, 6-1,6-0, in the quarterfinals.
    In the doubles, Ryan Willard and Koehrsen won 6-1, 6-0. Tyler Ngo and Trevor Lewandowski won, 6-4, 6-1, and Michael Doublin and Brendan Axelson won 6-4, 7-6.
    In the semifinals, the Redbirds defeated Notre Dame, 4-1.
    In the singles, Nguyen won in two sets, 6-2, 6-3.
    Lewandowski lost his match in three, 2-6, 6-1, 10-5.
    In the doubles, brothers William and Fletcher Koehrsen teamed up for a, 6-2, 6-3, win.
    Willard and Ngo won with just giving up one game, 6-0, 6-1. Doublin and Axelson won, 7-6, 6-1.
    In the championship over Barington, Metamora won, 3-2.
    William won 6-0, 6-2, and Willard won, 7-6, 6-2, in the singles.
    Nguyen and Fletcher won the only doubles match for Metamora, 6-1, 6-4.
    Ngo and Lewandowski were defeated 6-3, 6-2 and Doublin and Axelson lost, 6-1, 6-2.
    Metamora will play against East Peoria  at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Illinois Central College.
