  • A mental health and suicide awareness benefit concert entitled “My Soul a Canvas: for Cassie Calhoun” will be presented at 7 p.m. Monday, April 14, at the Kenneth H. Maurer Performing Arts Center at Metamora Township High School.
The concert will honor the memory of Cassie Calhoun who is an M.T.H.S. graduate who was active in both the Metamora bands and the Northern Illinois University Huskies Marching Band.  Cassie died tragically in April 2013 of suicide.
The Metamora Township High School Chamber Ensembles that will play that evening include the Flute Choir, the Tuba Quartet, the Tuba Ensemble and the Symphonic Band.  The highlight of the evening will be the world premiere of “My Soul a Canvas,” a new piece commissioned for the Symphonic Band by composer Todd Stalter in memory of Cassie.
Guest speaker Jamie Sanders, Coordinator of Whitney’s Walk for Life, will briefly address the pressing issue of suicide among  young people and the need for greater awareness and prevention.  Admission to the concert is free but donations will be accepted.  All donations from the concert will be given to Whitney’s Walk for Life, whose mission is depression awareness and suicide prevention, and M.T.H.S. Bands.
