  • More than three decades in a dugout and Jerry Rashid still has fresh ideas.
The Illinois Valley Central coach’s latest is a regional challenge between teams from the Peoria and Bloomington/Normal areas. The series will consist of five games played over three days at Dozer Park, home of the Peoria Chiefs.
“I thought it would be a great way to promote high school baseball in central Illinois,” Rashid said. “So (Chiefs president Rocky Vonachen) and I sat down and worked it out,”
    Here’s the schedule:
May 8, Olympia vs. Washington at 5 p.m., followed by Normal Community vs. Metamora.
May 9, Bloomington vs. Notre Dame at 5 p.m., followed by Normal West vs. Limestone.
    May 10, Normal U-High vs. IVC at 7 p.m.
Rashid said tickets will be $4 each and available from all participating teams. Advanced tickets purchased will be good for entrance to all five games.
“We’re hoping to maybe get the mayors of the involved towns to throw out the first pitches,” he said.
One of the few things Rashid hasn’t sorted out is a name for the event.
