  • The Metamora varsity softball team is picking up momentum in the post season. After earning just 10 wins in the regular season, the Lady Redbirds gained offensive and defensive edge on the field to earn a regional championship.

  • The Metamora varsity softball team is picking up momentum in the post season. After earning just 10 wins in the regular season, the Lady Redbirds gained offensive and defensive edge on the field to earn a regional championship.
    Metamora 8, Richwoods 1
    Well played base running, a homer by Abby Barrow and a few hits put together an 8-1 victory for Metamora in the regional semifinal game against Richwoods Thursday.
    Kara Hartnett started the Lady Redbirds scoring after a single to second and stealing all the way to home during Abby Tucker’s at bat in the first.
    Tucker walked and worked her way to third on the next two at bats. With Delaney Tjaden at the plate, Tucker bolted to steal home to make it a 2-0 game heading into the second.
    Jacki Daniel put in the third run for Metamora after advancing to third and stealing home with 
    Hartnett batting. Hartnett then grounded to the shortstop for Rachel Litviak to cross home .
    In the fourth, Litviak walked and worked her way to third. Mckinzie Marshall was batting and Litviak stole home for the fifth run.
    Barrow’s homer over the center-field fence was in the fifth on a 2-1 count. 
    The final runs for the Lady Redbirds were scored in the sixth.
    Litviak put in her third and final run off of Hartnett’s double to center. Barrow then put Hartnett across home off a double to right.
    Richwoods lone run came in the seventh off a homer over center.
    Tjaden struckout 10 Richwoods’ batters in seven innings for the post-season win.
    Hartnett went 2-for-3 at the plate for two RBIs.
    Metamora 3, Notre Dame 2
    A 3-2 win over Notre Dame was enough for the Lady Redbirds to win the regional title Saturday at Bradley Park.
    Notre Dame may have outhit the Lady Redbirds 9-3 but plays by Marshall and Tjaden in the first gave Metamora an early edge.
    Batting first, Hartnett bunted and was able to get on first. Tucker then grounded to second and was safe at first on a fielder’s choice.
    A triple to left field by Marshall put Tucker in for the first run.
    Page 2 of 2 - With Marshall and Barrow on base, Tjaden popped up to center for the two to score for Metamora’s three runs.
    Notre Dame had its first in the fifth after a walk with the bases loaded.
    In the seventh, the Lady Irish put in one run but came up short with a fly out to Tucker at second to finish the game.
    Tjaden earned the win on the mound for seven innings pitched with two strikeouts.
