  • After a devastating fire at their Morton warehouse in 2012, this year is bringing better news for LS Building Products.
Troy Reed, president of the company, said they are having a good year with sales projected to be their best.
“With the tornado in Washington, that’s much more likely,” Reed, who lives in Washington, said.
Business is so good, in fact, they are expanding their operations in East Peoria. The new location will be at 300 Pinecrest Drive. They will also keep their existing location at 3404 N. Main St.
In late May, the East Peoria Chamber of Commerce hosted a groundbreaking ceremony at the new location.
“We’re absolutely excited to get some more space,” Reed said.
    The business in East
Peoria has been on Main Street since 1978. A showroom was added on to the older portion of the building in 2004. The offices and showroom cover 9,000 square feet and the warehouse is 35,000 square feet. In the new spot, space will be expanded to 14,000 square feet and 45,000 square feet, respectively. Reed said they will better situate their offerings at the new location. The showroom and customer area will be incorporated together.
“More than anything we feel like we’re outgrowing the area ... It’s going to be nice having the office and showroom,” he said.
Plus, they have had issues with flooding at the Main Street location, which is on an access road with the Illinois River closed to their backyard. That is where their lumber is stored. When the river flooded last year, Reed said they had to move 300 trucks of supplies.
Eventually, Reed said they may move their entire production on Main Street to the Pinecrest address, where they have about 5 acres.
Reed said the company began in 1950 as Midwest Wholesale. It was formerly located along Camp Street in East Peoria. Reed, Dan Schumacher and Matt Jaeger purchased the business from Gary McCormick in 2001.
The company, according to the website, offers lumber, windows, roofing, stone, exterior doors, locks and hardware, interior millwork, decking, fencing and railing and kitchen design. Reed said they also offer vinyl siding.
Professional remodelers and builders are the main clients of LS Building Products, and Reed said their main focus is residential and some light commercial.
The company, Reed said, is in the top 75 of its category for sales. Reed said one thing that gives them a competitive edge is that they deliver about 95 percent of their materials to the job site. Plus, they have specialized delivery vehicles that can lift materials to a roof, among other things.
Page 2 of 2 - “The box stores aren’t typically direct competitors. You have to come in and pick up materials,” he said. “It’s a little more cumbersome.”
Reed said the company employs about 100 people in their various locations, including their millwork and fence division at 255 Cilco Lane in East Peoria and facilities in Champaign and Pontoon Beach.
“I think what really separates us, we have specialized people throughout the company. ... It makes us a lot more efficient and we can handle more volume,” he said.
The site work at the new location in East Peoria is finished and the steel has been ordered. P.J. Hoerr is constructing the new facility, which Reed said, has been several years in the making. The new building is set to be complete by the end of this year and Reed will move his office to that location.
“We’re kind of hidden down here,” Reed said. “Most people don’t know about us unless they’re a builder, contractor or remodeler. We’re a best-kept secret.”
