  • After defeating Peoria Notre Dame for the sectional title, the Metamora varsity baseball team advanced to the super-sectional for a berth in the state tourney.
It didn’t prove too much of a challenge for the Redbirds at Augustana College’s Brunner Field May 9.
Metamora defeated Sycamore with a 10-0 shut out in six innings.
Brady Fairfield executed at the plate and closed the game with six RBIs off three hits.
Geremy Guerrero performed at his best again for nine strikeouts and allowing just one run.
“We got on their heels we felt. We got the lead, we felt attentive, we attacked them from the pitchers mound. You can only do that if your pitcher executes and (Guerrero) did that,” coach Eric Stone said.
    “A one-hit, 10-run shut out in a super-sectional, that’s unheard of.”
The Redbirds struggled locating the ball at the plate the first two innings but with starting the third in the bottom of the order, things came together.
Guerrero was leading off and knocked one to left on the first pitch. Zach Theiler walked  and a wild pitch with Braden Mann at the plate advanced the runners.
Fairfield had his two first RBIs  after a fly single to center.
Skender up next then doubled to left for Fairfield to cross home.
Drew Beenders then walked and Brendan Nachtrieb knocked one to center for the last run of the inning to make it 4-0.
“I’ve got to credit the bottom of the order for getting on base. We scouted the pitcher all week and we knew what we were going to see,” Fairfield said.
In the fourth, Fairfield had another two runs batted in after sending a fly to double for pinch-runner Joe Kennell and Theiller to score.
Guerrero had a three-straight strikeout inning
    in the fifth.
Jake Guede and Guerrero had back-to-back hits to get on base in the sixth. Theiler sacrificed a bunt to advance the runners and then Fairfield lined one to center for pinch-runners Corbin Adams and Kennell to score, making it an 8-0 ball game.
With Fairfield on second and Skender on first from a walk, Beenders drilled one to center for Fairfield to score.
The game-winning run was put in by Beenders off Nachtriebs line drive to center off the first pitch.
“I went up there and first pitch was a curve ball and I sat on it so we were able to get out a little early. It’s always nice to not give the other team a chance to come back,” Nachtrieb said.

Nachtrieb finished going 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
The Redbirds made it to super-sectionals last season but fell to Wheaton St. Francis, 7-3 before they could get to state.
“You can tell we’ve been here before and we’re going to play our game,” Stone said.
