  • Thirty Woodford County youth participated in the 2014 Bicycle Rodeo, which was held  June 13, at the Davenport Elementary School playground in Eureka. All youth, first grade and older, were invited to participate.
    Riders were tested on straight-line control, weaving, emergency stopping, changing direction and more. Bikes were inspected by Russell’s Cycling and Fitness and were checked for proper braking function, seat and handlebar height and tire pressure. The American Red Cross handed out free bike helmets.
    Winners in the first and second-grade age group were Logan Johansen, first place; Jillian Overholt, second place; and Hudson Shaw, third place. 
    In the third and fourth-grade age group, the winners were Nigel Robinson, first place; Macie Hutchinson, second place; and Tyler Robenstein, third place. 
    Fifth grade and older winners were Caleb Schrock, first place; Hannah Schrock, second place; and Dylan Hutchinson, third place.
    Eight Bicycle Rodeo participants were also enrolled in the 4-H bicycle project and competed for ribbons. In addition to the riding course, these participants also completed a written exam about bicycle safety. 
    Maria Cottrell was the 4-H champion bike I plaque winner, and Caleb Schrock was the 4-H champion bike II plaque winner. 
    Other bicycle project members receiving blue ribbons included Silas Cottrell, Dylan Hutchinson, Macie Hutchinson, Tyler Robenstein, Michael Trueblood and Lily Twait.
    University of Illinois Extension -- Woodford Unit, Schroeder State Farm Insurance Agency, Russell’s Cycling & Fitness, American Red Cross, Eureka Police Department and the Woodford County Sheriff’s Department are the sponsors of The Bicycle Rodeo.
