  • The Metamora boys golf team will swing into a new season and head coach Bill Upp is looking forward to his second year leading the team.
“We’re always looking forward to the new season. It’s always exciting, everyone’s has high expectations,” Upp said.
The boys team had one player graduate after the 2013-14 school year and will return most of their roster. Not returning will be Mid-Illini first team All-Conference qualifier Trey Tussey. Upp said the soon-to-be junior will be attending a school in Hilton Head, S.C. to pursue his career in golf.
“We’re sorry to lose (Tussey), but at the same time that’s an opportunity you don’t want to deny a young player.,” Upp said.
“I just think it’s a great opportunity for him. But with that said we still have six-seven seniors on the team with good leadership for the younger kids. It’ll work out, it’ll be OK. We’re pretty excited.”
Senior Lucas Munter was the lone state qualifier in the 2013 season. At state, Munter posted an 86 on the first day and dropped his score by nine strokes to score a 77 on day two.
“(Munter’s) been at the summer workouts so I’ll expect him to be on the team with the rest of the seniors.
It’s going to be a senior laden team this year,” Upp said.
“We are looking forward to seeing how Dominic Shaheen and Munter and Peyton Biernat fair in the conference matches and conference tournament. It’s a ways away but younger guys can step up any moment.”
The boys golf team will make their debut at the Peoria Notre Dame
    Classic Monday.
“Golf is unique because you have one week of tryouts and practice before your first tournament,” Upp said.
“It’s unique it’s going to be exciting. The M-I looks stacked top to bottom again so its going to be a fun, fun golf season.”
The Metamora boys and girls golf teams will host their Redbird Classic Sept. 13 at Metamora Fields. The M-I Conference meet will be held Oct. 2 and will be followed by the beginning of the state tourney with regionals Oct. 7.
