I haven't posted a blog entry lately, I know...It's May. The end of the school year and the heart of the busy fund-raising season for Snyder Village, where I work. Over the last 3 weeks, I have been reminded acutely that I am not as young as I used to be! And then my mother reminds me, "Try being in your fifties! Menopause stinks, the mirror gives me no mercy, and body aches? Puh-leeze!"
We have a sweet lady in the Health Center who is turning 104 years old this month! How incredible to live that long! Not only to be alive, but to be mentally sharp! I talk to her at least once a day and once a week I get to do the "Sit and Fit" exercise program with her. She goes every day but I only volunteer once a week. Every day, she is smiling and active.
I was wondering today, as I looked at her birthday on the calendar, how different life was when she was born. I am still amazed by the leaps in technology in the 30 plus years I have been alive- I can't even begin to imagine how she must feel when she thinks back to her youth. Our complaints must seem so silly to her, For fun, I looked up some of the differences in between now and 100 years ago- and let's just say, I appreciate today. Here are some of the things I found:
I took my kids to Medieval Times this weekend for my son’s birthday. He got to bring a friend. Three children between the ages 9 and 12 in the back seat makes for a very interesting three-hour journey. At one point, I said, “I can’t concentrate with all you yahoos in the back seat!” My daughter says, “Mom, we are children, not search engines!”
How is it that two kids can make your home feel like something off Discovery Channel?
The time I spent with her yesterday reminded me how precious time can be. Time, there is never enough of it, or I have too much of it on my hands, or it's flying by or dragging on or running out… No matter what, I am never satisfied with Time.
It’s not about vanity, but good lighting helps! Know what I’m talking about ladies? I had a couple of different conversations last week about all things girlie from covering our gray hairs to how bad lighting makes us look AWFUL! This made me think about the reality of our looks as women.
Guest blogger Jeanette Kendall asks when should a woman stop dyeing their hair?
I am so excited for spring! Makes me feel young and vibrant when the weather is sunny and nice! I find it very interesting how strongly the environment affects how we feel.
Welcome to the world of the “grown-ups.” I actually used this phrase on my daughter this week. It came about somewhere within a conversation about life not being fair.
I am not comfortable with growing older. To me, aging goes hand in hand with loss. I have a long list of loved ones that, according to me, need to live forever.
I was reading that the last WWI Veteran passed away recently. It’s hard to believe sometimes that entire generations and their history are just gone one day.
At work, we are beginning a “Commit to Get Fit” campaign for 2012. I’m sure, like me, many people out there made that timeless resolution to be healthier, exercise or something along the lines of health. How are you doing with it?
I was inspired by Jeanette’s guest blog last week and feel compelled to admit something. I am 33 and I have bifocals. Talk about feeling like an old lady! I was shocked when Dr. Funk told me I needed bifocals!
As I have grown a little older, as I do every day, I have come to realize one of life’s most unfair peculiarities. Have you noticed that men get better-looking as they age? We women just seem to get wrinkly!
43. This is how old I am. This is the age I had to get eyeglasses.
Do you ever have one of those weekends where you feel sorry for yourself, sit on the couch and watch sappy Hallmark channel movies all day while you completely ignore the rest of the world? Yeah, me too.
The weather has definitely made the last couple days interesting! I am so lucky to have a wonderful neighbor who takes it upon himself to plow my driveway for me.
It’s hard to grow old…older…whatever. I know I’m only 33. ONLY. But seriously, to my kids, I am the crypt-keeper!
When someone says to you, “I hate that Nursing Home smell,” you know exactly what smell they are talking about, don’t you!
Well, Christmas is done and the year is about to end.
