At work, we are beginning a “Commit to Get Fit” campaign for 2012. I’m sure, like me, many people out there made that timeless resolution to be healthier, exercise or something along the lines of health. How are you doing with it? It is February now, a whole month has flown by and I am not doing so good. I have gotten on my treadmill a total of four times, that would be a 20% completion of my goal for last month. But if I count all the time I spend arguing with myself to get on that thing, I would be doing great!
And, as I get older, there is so much more to worry about than just fitting into those cute skinny jeans. In my 33 years, I have had health scares including cancer possibilities, tumors and just freak accidents. I have dealt with high blood pressure, depression, anxiety, stress…. I miss the days of being a teenager when I could eat and drink whatever I pleased and I still looked good. Now, I have to think about every morsel I consume and I can usually see the consequences of my bad choices within hours. I don’t have the answer, I don’t believe there is an easier way. For me, being healthy is an internal battle at least twice a day- usually more.
So why is it so hard to do what we KNOW we need to do? I ask my kids that all the time- why can’t you just do what you KNOW you need to do? But, honestly, I can’t seem to answer that question myself most days… Whether it is being healthy, getting things done at work or at home, or just simply getting up on time some mornings, why is it so easy to defeat ourselves? This seems to be an ageless question.
