My East Peoria!

If you enjoy photography for photography’s sake but can’t think of anything interesting to shoot, you may want to consider your own city or town. You may find some very interesting things you never really noticed before.

When I first became interested in photography, I subscribed to a 96-issue “How-To” magazine series published in England. I also read all the photography “How-To” books from the East Peoria and Pekin Libraries. I would have searched the Internet but there was no Internet in 1972. It would have been something you’d have seen on Rod Serling’s “Twilight Zone”.

In order to get better with my photography, I had to practice what I read so I assigned myself personal projects to do what I was taught. Some of the assignments were; Fire Hydrants, Cemeteries, Master of the Universe figurines, and Mailboxes. Eventually, somewhere along the line I decided to photograph people. From people to weddings, from weddings to models, from models to glamour. Now I’ve added landscapes, eagles, and back to self-assignments.

For these photos, I gave myself the assignment of photographing my hometown in a manner of “not the everyday shots that would just show East Peoria”. I wanted to challenge myself to show the “character” of East Peoria.

So, if you are really interested in the “art” of photography, challenge yourself to a self-imposed project. When you do, practice the Ten Photography Basics you read in earlier posts and you may be surprised at how interesting your photos can be!
