If God is Love.....

...then why do we have starving children in the world, devastating diseases, bloody wars, etc?  How many times have you heard these questions, or maybe even have asked them yourself?  It is a frustrating situation to be in when things just don't seem to make sense around us.

Solomon, the wisest man to ever live, addresses this in the book of Ecclesiastes:  "When I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done on earth, how neither day nor night do one's eyes see sleep, then I saw all the work of God, that man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun. However, much man may toil in seeking, he will not find out. Even though a wise man claims to know, he cannot find it out." (8:16-17)

Is this what you were expecting?  Is this not the answer you were hoping to read? Well, it actually does answer all the questions I mentioned above, plus any other questions you may have about why things are the way they are.  Ultimately, sin the reason we have bad things in this world.  But, Solomon says that no matter how smart we think we are, we will never understand why God works in the ways he does.

You may think that Solomon's words are not very encouraging.  And, in fact, downright unfair.  Why shouldn't we be able to make sense of the events in the world around us?  Why can't we ask God and He just tell us why evil seems to triumph across the earth?

The bottom line is that God doesn't answer to us.  We are His created beings and He can do whatever He wants. The Bible does promise us that God does everything for our good, so, despite the trouble we encounter, we can still trust in God.

The problem we human beings have in reconciling these questions is that we live in a society where everyone strives for fairness.  If the waiter is rude, we expect our meal to be paid for.  If an item at the store is mistakenly placed on a sale display, we expect the store to honor that.  Admit it - we are used to getting our own way in the way we want it.  God doesn't work this way.  God existed long before we ever stepped foot on this earth.  And the sooner we accept this, the easier it will be to walk in faith and allow God to work in the ways He KNOWS is best.
