The Peoria Police Department has issued Halloween safety tips for those giving out candy and those children, parents, and motorists out and about Tuesday evening and night. These tips are applicable to Pekin residents and are as follows:

1. Trick-or-treating:

• Avoid trick-or-treating alone. Adults should accompany small children and know the planned route of older children.

• Always use crosswalks or cross streets at the corner after looking both ways. Use sidewalks; otherwise, stay to the side of the road and walk facing traffic.

• Do not run to the next house.

• Visit homes with porch lights on.

• Accept treats at the door. Never go inside.

• Do not eat candy until an adult is able to inspect it at home. Adults should throw away unwrapped candy. Homemade treats should not be accepted from strangers.

• Do not accept rides from strangers.

2. For motorists:

• Be aware of excited children about the streets and sidewalks. Exercise extreme caution in the early evening hours, including while backing from driveways.

• Do not wear any type of mask that could restrict your vision.

• If attending a party where alcohol is served, appoint a designated driver.

3. Greeting trick-or-treaters:

• To welcome trick-or-treaters, leave a porch light on.

• Do not hand out unwrapped or homemade candy.

• Restain household pets.

4. Costumes:

• Outfits should be flame resistant.

• Avoid masks that can get hot or impair vision. Instead, try face paint.

• Add reflective tape to costumes and trick-or-treat bags. If not in costume, wear light-colored clothing.

• Costume prop weapons should be made from a flexible material, such as cardboard.

• Do not carry realistic-looking guns.

• Use a flashlight.

The city of Pekin does not have designated trick-or-treat hours.
