A familiar, reliable name appears ready to occupy a Downtown Peoria location that's played host to a seemingly endless parade of bars and restaurants.
Rumberger's Wings & More is preparing a third Peoria outlet, at 500 Main St. It's expected to open in late February or in March.
The new restaurant is to fill vacant space at Main Street and Madison Avenue, adjacent to the shuttered Madison Theater. But it appears this Rumberger's will be a bit different than the chicken-wing emporium's other Peoria locations.
The new Rumberger's is to be more of a sports bar, according to Shaun Mosley, the restaurant's marketing specialist. Hamburgers, salads and wraps are to be included among the varieties of chicken wings on the menu.
Alcohol also is to be available, Mosley told Nick in the Morning.
The Main-Madison location most recently was home of Club Purple, a nightclub that has been closed for about a year. Other establishments in that location have included Shifters Pub, the Whammy Bar, Babe's, Eurojack's and the Fifth Amendment.
Peoria old-timers will recall that spot as the first incarnation of The Judge's Chamber, which relocated elsewhere in the same building along Main Street. The Judge's Chamber held court at Main and Madison for much of the mid-to-late 1980s.
The business that has had the most endurance at Main and Madison might be S.O.P.'s, a restaurant and bar operated by the late Mike "Sully" Sullivan. It lasted from the mid-to-late 1990s through the early 2000s.
Rumberger's debuted in 2014 on the East Bluff, at 3127 N. Prospect Road. A second Rumberger's opened about a year ago at Northpoint Shopping Plaza, 8807 N. Knoxville Ave. in North Peoria.
Those locations offer more than a dozen flavors and options of classic and boneless wings, as well as catfish, shrimp and Rumberger's renowned "Rum Buns."
