The Pekin softball team didn’t have another comeback in its arsenal Thursday.
So the Dragons lost 7-4 to Limestone in their Mid-Illini Conference finale.
Down 4-0, Pekin (7-13, 4-10) scored four times in the top of the fifth inning to tie the game 4-4.
Limestone (17-9, 10-3) responded with three runs in the bottom of the sixth.
“It was a well-played game,” said Pekin coach Skip Penning. “We didn’t do anything wrong. They just beat us.”
Grace Wyman hit an RBI double to get Pekin on the board in the fifth. With two out, two runs scored on Lainie Rettke’s hard-hit ball to third base that was ruled an error and Olivia Percefull tied the game with an RBI single.
Alyssa Heerman’s RBI single put Limestone back in front in the sixth and Randilyn Smith gave the Rockets some insurance with a two-run homer.
Rettke came on in relief of starting pitcher Lexi Juergens in the fourth and pitched well, Penning said.
“Lainee made one mistake, and they hit that home run,” Penning said.
Penning said he made the change on the mound to give Limestone batters “something different to look at” and save Juergens’ arm for next week’s regionals.
Smith had a two-run single in Limestone’s four-run third and she finished the day with four RBIs. Winning pitcher Taylor Thomas went the distance and allowed six hits.
Pekin will play host to Rock Island at 10 a.m. Saturday in a non-conference doubleheader.
