PEORIA — Some CEFCU members became the victims of fraud over the weekend when their debit cards were illicitly used to gain control of their accounts, the credit union confirmed on Tuesday.

Chief technology officer Tim Dunton said in a prepared statement that a "very small number" of members were victimized by the fraud. The cause is under investigation.

"CEFCU staff is in the process of contacting members that were affected," Dunton said. "As per CEFCU’s zero liability policy, and as with any card compromise event, members are not liable for any fraudulent activity. Funds lost will be returned to member accounts."

Suspicious activity can be reported to CEFCU by calling (800) 633-7077.
