When it comes to getting the attention of the opposite sex for prom MTHS boys are not slouches.
Girls ...
My last prom was 35 years ago.
As I thought about it I realized guys had it much easier than girls when it came to prom back then.
We had to get a tux, some flowers and make a dinner reservation. That’s not so hard.
Whoa!
I forgot something important. There was also getting your date home on time.
So, I went in Salon Seven to quiz owner Chrissy Fisher about what it takes for a girl these days to get ready for prom.
As a guy, I didn’t pay a lot of attention to what went into getting ready for prom. I didn’t have to.
My prom date was the girl I ended up marrying.
I didn’t have to make a lot of decisions about prom, or many since, for that matter.
Fisher was more than happy to broach this topic.
“Girls today are going all out with hair extensions and make-up. Hair is a big deal for prom,” Fisher said.
“Girls are all going for different styles. Girls no longer all want the same style. It’s a lot fancier now.”
Fisher said that poses a challenge for her, but she enjoys it.
“I love the fancy up do’s,” she said.
(Guys, don’t ask me what “up do” means. I have no idea. Go ask a woman. There were three other woman standing with Fisher as she told me this. The number of woman who think I’m completely clueless is already big enough. I pretended I knew what she meant.)
“The girls today know what they want. They’ve done their research when they come in here,” Fisher said. “Prom is important. It’s a milestone event. It’s very important to girls.”
... and guys
As times have changed, a guy’s responsibility when it comes to prom in Metamora, has also changed, Fisher told me.
I mentioned that in my day guys didn’t have to do much to get prepared.
“That’s changed,” Fisher said.
“The thing in Metamora is that guys have to ask girls to prom in a big way. The guys have to step it up to out-do the next guy.”
So, I headed to MTHS to find out what level of ingenuity Metamora boys can conjure up.

A teacher told me of one young man’s quest to get a date.
He came to school dressed as a cowboy, complete with hat and lasso.
In the hallway of MTHS he walked up to the girl, lassoed her and pulled off his hat which had the question
“Will you be my cowgirl?” written inside on a piece of paper.
MTHS junior Caitlin Husted told me there were two guys who employed a scavenger hunt to ask a couple of girls out.
MTHS junior Brandon White scored a date with notes attached to chocolate candies.
“She liked it,” White said.
“You’ve got to do something creative. It is a little competitive among the guys here.”
Husted said she likes the efforts the boys go to.
“Some guys have surprised me with how creative they can be. I wouldn’t have thought of some of the things they’ve come up with,” she said.
Husted has a date for prom.
Her date made her heart go pitter-pat with an origami swan that read “Prom?”
She said he made it himself. That’s impressive.
But, Taylor Rudd, an MTHS junior, had the best story I heard.
“I was at a guy’s house when there was a knock on the door. There was a cop at the door. He told me I was illegally parked,” Rudd said.
“I went to put my shoes on to move the car. When I got back to the door the cop handed me a ticket. It said, ‘Prom?’”
The young man got a date.
These young men do have some ingenuity.
