EDITORIAL - Reputation is deserved

The woman standing in the Open Arms Food Pantry looked absolutely grim.

She did not want to be there. But, she was. She had to find a way to help feed the two small ones who hovered close to her in this strange place.

The children’s eyes kept darting to the table to their left. It was full of cookies, cupcakes and cakes. They did not ask for any. When the woman tending to them said the children could each pick something from the table — that it did not count toward their food order — smiles appeared on their little faces.

There are too few smiles on childrens’ faces in Woodford County when dinner time arrives.

Children, adults and seniors have been doing without food.

That issue, however, is under attack all over Woodford County. The battle is being waged by churches, schools and volunteers, both at food pantries and in schools.

The needy will always be with us the Bible says.

And, it appears, in Woodford County, those who will comfort them will always be around.   

Central Illinois has a reputation as a place full on incredibly generous people, willing to help out their fellowman. It is a well-deserved reputation.

Woodford County is a part of the reason for that reputation.
