Kathleen L. Grady of the American Heart Association Illinois Advocacy Committee is not very happy with Congress.
Congress is ordering the U.S. Department of Agriculture to consider pizza as a vegetable for school lunches.
“Even if we ignore the technicality that a tomato is a fruit rather than a vegetable, this is a sad example of lawmakers putting the financial interests of the food lobby ahead of the well-being of kids.”
Grady said that currently there is not a single person between the ages of 12 and 19 in this nation that meets the American Heart Association’s criteria for ideal cardiovascular health.
This would mean Congress is putting the needs of special interests ahead of the welfare and well-being of the nation’s children.
Ridiculous, we say, (with tongue in cheek).
Of course, that is what they are doing.
That is the normal course of action for Congress.
When Congress has to balance the best interests of the people against their own interests (which means their contributor’s best interests) the people can expect to lose almost every time.
Who is to blame? Congress? Lobbyists? School administrators? How about all of us.
People allow their local members of Congress to say “I’m fighting for you against those other irresponsible members of Congress.”
The result is our elected officials are not held accountable by the people to the degree they should be.
The members of Congress, know that short of a huge scandal, they are pretty much safe no matter what they do.
As long as they wave at parades and remember people’s names they are essentially re-electable.
Grady said Congress should “not practice an ignorance that allows a heap of French fries to be considered a legitimate nutritional element.
Let’s all chew that over.
In the meantime, pass a slice of vegetable with extra cheese and green peppers.
