The Journal Star area started fresh on Friday at Illinois High School Association girls golf state finals.

Two area freshmen, Allison Pacocha of Eureka and Elaine Grant of Illinois Valley Central, lead the Class 1A field despite the cold and snowy conditions at Red Tail Run Golf Course in Decatur.

Pacocha shot a 1-under-par 71, while Grant shot 2-over 74 and is tied second individually with Pontiac senior Ali Schrock, the Class 1A individual champion last season.

Only one area girls golfer has struck individual gold at state: Metamora's Renee Heiken won single-class titles in 1987 and '89. Heiken (now Renee Sloan) is the women's golf coach at Illinois.

Macomb junior Emma Thorman is in fourth place in 1A after shooting an opening round 75. Thorman tied for seventh last season.

Pacocha and Schrock are joined by their sisters in the top 10 individual standings. Pontiac freshman Dani Grace Schrock shot 76 and is in a tie for fifth, while Eureka senior Carolyn Pacocha is tied for ninth with 78. Pacocha, the 2017 Journal Star Girls Golfer of the Year finished 17th at the Class 1A state finals last season.

In the team standings, Metamora finished with a 366 to finish in ninth place on the afternoon. The Redbirds failed to make the cut by three strokes. Chicago Latin was the last team to move on, with a 363.
