1943 - 2016

Darrell Wayne Vanden Brink, 73, of Pekin, passed away at 5:57 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, 2016, at Pekin Hospital.

Born March 12, 1943, in Archer, Iowa, to Wynard and Marie (Kleinwolterink) Vanden Brink. He married Marjorie Ann “Marge” Wurr on June 22, 1968, in Tipton, Iowa. She survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Tara (Chris) Zaayenga of Green Valley; two grandchildren, Cael Zaayenga and Reya Zaayenga; one brother, Galen (Mary) Vanden Brink of Aurora, Colorado; and two sisters, Eleanor Burkman of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Marylin (Gerrit) Van Der Zwaag of Hull, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Rodney Vanden Brink; and two sisters, Elmamae Klutman and Phyllis Vanden Brink.

Darrell worked for Minnesota Flexible Corporation (formerly Midwest Hydra-line, Inc.) for 25 years, retiring in 2012 from sales at the Peoria office.

He was a member of Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Pekin.

Darrell was a sports fan who enjoyed following the Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bulls and NASCAR. He also enjoyed working puzzles and playing cards. He will be remembered for his love for telling jokes, always making everyone feel welcome and for never knowing a stranger. He loved his family and cherished his daughter and grandchildren.

His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 28, 2016, at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin. The Rev. Chuck Grogan will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, and also from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Friday, both at the funeral home. Cremation will be accorded following the funeral.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to an educational fund for his grandchildren.
