Sometimes after a loss you just have to give credit to your opponent.

That’s what Pekin baseball coach Larry Davis did Wednesday night after Limestone defeated the visiting Dragons 6-4 in the Mid-Illini Conference and regular-season finale for Pekin (11-13, 5-9).

“Limestone hit the ball well,” Davis said. “You’d think if we scored four runs with Nathan Righi pitching for us, we’d have a good chance to win. But that didn’t happen.”

The Rockets (17-8, 9-5) had six runs and eight hits in four innings off Righi, Pekin’s ace pitcher. All the hits came in the first and fourth. Limestone scored three runs in the first and three runs in the fourth.

Catcher Braden Lavin, Righi’s batterymate, led Pekin’s offense.

Lavin had a two-run double in the second and an RBI single in the sixth. Michael Ellwanger knocked in the Dragons’ other run with an RBI single in the sixth.

Pekin is off until 4:30 p.m. Monday, when it will play host to East Moline United Township (4-23) at Harry Anderson Field in the play-in game for the Normal Community Class 4A Regional.
