One of the biggest cruise-ins in the area is coming to downtown Pekin next weekend and will feature between 600 to 800 cars.

The Super Cruise Car and Motorcycle show is set for July 27 and 28. Coordinator Steve Bresnahan said the Super Cruise is a family-friendly event. There is no cost to get in to the event.

“Come down for a couple of hours, and we’ll get you a good parking spot,” Bresnahan said.

The weekend kicks off at 5 p.m. on Friday, July 27, with Bike Night, hosted by the city of Pekin. On both Friday and Saturday, Court and Third streets by the railroad tracks will be blocked off. On Friday, Fourth Street down to Third will be closed, and on Saturday, upper Court from Five Points down to Third will be blocked off, as well as one block of side streets on each side of Court except for through traffic on Fifth Street.

Classic and custom motorcycles can be judged in six categories with two trophies per category awarded. The exception is reserved for the Best of Show trophy. Awards for the bike show will be announced around 9 p.m. Sponsor Trophy House in Pekin will donate the trophies for the contest.

Bresnahan, a car and motorcycle enthusiast, encourages motorcycle owners to ride their bikes over to the competition.

“Bring your motorcycle down and maybe get a trophy,” he said. “Hopefully we’ll have good weather.”

Pekin residents might have noticed flyers for Super Cruise posted around the downtown area. Bresnahan said there was one change to the information listed on the flyers. The live music will be performed by the band Jack Dupp and the Empty Bottles, not Glory Days. The band comes from Bloomington and is known for playing songs by Tom Petty, Led Zeppelin and others. This is the band’s first time playing on Bike Night. They will perform from 7 to 11 p.m.

Both Friday night and Saturday will feature face painting with reasonable pricing, Bresnahan said. He recommended giving henna a chance if someone wants to try out a temporary tattoo. Henna tattoos, priced at $3, will also be at the face painting booth.

On Saturday, July 28, the Downtown Cruise will display classic, muscle and custom cars along with hot rods, rat rods and lowriders. Local bars in downtown Pekin will ban together for a beer garden, where participants can walk around with a drink such as a beer or a wine cooler. The garden will be confined within barricades.

All of downtown Pekin will be blocked off Saturday. Traffic will still be able to get through Fifth Street.

There will also be a live broadcast from 93.3 The Drive and a live DJ from noon to 8 p.m. The cruise-in is sponsored by numerous local businesses in addition to the city of Pekin.

“It’ll be fun, just pray for good weather,” Bresnahan said.

Similar to past years, a crowd of 7,000 is expected to attend Super Cruise.

“In 14 years, it’s never stopped, and there’s never been much rain,” Bresnahan said.
