PEORIA — UnityPoint Health is offering a free class to help chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients.

Participants will learn more on their diagnosis, the benefits of pulmonary rehabilitation, how to manage COPD, smoking cessation, diet and exercise, and proper use of inhalers. A respiratory therapist, a pulmonary rehabilitation specialist, a dietitian and a COPD coordinator will work with patients to educate them on the disease and treatment of the most common variations, including emphysema and bronchitis.

“Caring for a patient with a chronic disease often means a patient needs to see multiple specialists and healthcare professionals. Our goal was to bring the entire team caring for patients with COPD into one setting for patients to learn how to manage their condition in a quick, convenient and efficient setting,” said Janel Nimrick, coordinator for UnityPoint Clinic Clinical Excellence.

COPD classes are offered free of charge by referral from a UnityPoint Health primary care provider or specialist. To sign up for a class, patients can speak to their UnityPoint Health provider.
