The Pekin wrestling team didn’t leave Batavia on Saturday empty-handed.
The Dragons (6-10) defeated Maine West 43-31 in their final dual of day after losing 50-27 to Batavia and 52-28 to Schaumburg in earlier duals.
“Our guys fought hard against some tough opponents,” said Pekin coach John Jacobs.
Three Dragons went undefeated.
Ryan Haynes (126) recorded two pins and he won by a 12-2 decision against Maine West. Drake Hawkins (138) won by a decision and pin before a forfeit against Maine West. Jared Dowell (195) had two pins and a forfeit against Maine West.
Pekin’s Demarcus Watson (103) won a big match against Maine West, beating his opponent 11-0.
“Demarcus sealed the win for us,” Jacobs said.
This was the second year the Dragons competed in the Batavia super duals event.
Pekin will have a special night Thursday when it hosts Limestone and Canton in Mid-Illini Conference duals in Custer-Stoudt Gym.
Former Pekin wrestling coach Jack Stoudt, who died June 14 at age 87, will be honored at about 5 p.m. before the Dragons’ first dual.
T-shirts commemorating Stoudt will be sold and his widow Elaine is expected to be in attendance on Jack Stoudt Night.
Stoudt was Pekin’s coach from 1968-1989 and 1993-2000. The Dragons won 466 duals, 30 conference championships, 22 IHSA district or regional titles and seven sectional crowns during his tenure.
He coached 84 state tournament qualifiers including 21 who placed (finished in the top eight).
Three of his wrestlers were state champions: heavyweight Bob Taylor in 1976, heavyweight Randy Taylor in 1980 and 167-pounder Dan Ritchie in 1988.
Pekin’s lower gym is named for Stoudt and Jim Custer, another ex-Dragons wrestling coach. Stoudt worked with Custer as an assistant coach from 1957-1967.
Jacobs replaced Stoudt as Pekin’s coach after Stoudt’s retirement in 2000. Jacobs wrestled for Stoudt for three years and was an assistant coach under him for three years before being promoted.
Stoudt was a history and physical education teacher at Pekin from 1957-1993.
