ROANOKE — The Secretary of State's Driver Services Facility in Roanoke could re-open by Wednesday, officials said.
It was temporarily closed on Thursday after a small electrical fire damaged a wall, electrical panel and outside meter at the facility at 106 W. Broad St.
Ameren Illinois workers who were down the street saw the fire on the outside meter while working at another building and rushed to help extinguish the blaze, Secretary of State spokesman Henry Haupt said Friday.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, and some clean-up work and checks of wiring in the building remain, he said.
The date of re-opening is likely to be solidified on Monday, Haupt said.
The office is ordinarily closed from Saturday afternoon through Tuesday morning, and was already scheduled to be closed Tuesday for the state's observation of Abraham Lincoln's birthday.
