PEORIA — Peoria's Air National Guard base will be getting a new firehouse after all.
U.S. Reps. Darin LaHood and Cheri Bustos separately each announced that funding that had previously been set aside in the budget to build a new fire facility at the 182nd Airlift Wing was now set to be spent.
LaHood called the move "a win for the 182nd Airlift Wing and the Greater Peoria community.”
The firehouse will also cover Gen. Wayne A. Downing Peoria International Airport.
Bustos said in a release that the awarding of the $7.8 million contract meant that the money would not be shifted elsewhere because of President Donald Trump's emergency declaration. She had previously indicated concern that the funds could be held up to instead fund construction of a wall on the Mexican border.
"Critical military construction projects should never be placed on hold because of politics," Bustos said.
A date for breaking ground on the project has not yet been set.
