The extensive excavation on and around Vonachen Court is part of Ameren Illinois’ statewide effort to enhance the integrity, safety and reliability of the company’s natural gas delivery system.
According to Ameren Illinois North spokesperson Stacey Shangraw, they began installing polyethylene pipe to replace the mechanically-coupled steel pipe that currently makes up the natural gas facilities. The project is primarily taking place on Vonachen Court, but some work is also being done on the corner of Highview Road and Clayton Court. Shangraw expects the project to be completed by mid-October.
"The mechanically-coupled steel pipe that is being replaced was installed in the 1950s," said Shangraw. "The new flexible polyethylene pipe being installed will be able to hold a little more capacity, and since it is thermally fused together, it will help to create a safer and more reliable system for our customers."
