The focus on doubles matches has paid dividends for the Metamora girls tennis team this season.
A 6-0, 6-1 win by the Redbirds senior team of Madison Brinkman and Mara Boast over Brooke Naramore and Grace Roozenboom in No. 1 doubles sealed a 5-4 win over Washington last week to complete an undefeated (6-0) Mid-Illini Conference regular season for the Redbirds.
"It was a very good match," Redbirds coach Brad Boeker said. "We have been confident in our doubles play all year. We spend about two-thirds of our practice time on doubles, and it’s great that it has been paying off."
In the match against the Panthers, the teams split the six singles matches.
"It was looking like we would handle No. 3 doubles, and that Washington had a good chance at No. 2," Boeker said. "I told Madi and Mara that they needed to step up and play like senior captains. And, boy, did they ever."
For the season, Metamora is 10-0 in dual matches.
"I think our overall schedule helps us as we get to post-season play," Boeker said. "We play a tough schedule — both duals and tournaments. And by the time we get to late September, the girls have played close, tough matches. This year we have pulled out a lot of those matches, and the girls’ confidence is growing."
