The Peoria Times-Observer was notified this morning it has won six awards in the “Excellence in News Contest,” sponsored by the Illinois Press Association.

Peoria Times-Observer news editor DeWayne Bartels will bring home four awards when they are presented at the Illinois Press Association News and Editorial Convention Oct. 9-10. At the convention the place for all awards will be revealed.

One of Bartels’ awards is for general excellence, which sports editor Tom Batters shares.

One award for Bartels is in the category of local editorial for an editorial titled, “No sympathy for Peoria police.”

One award is in the category of feature writing for a story titled, “Recipe for Redemption.”

The final award is in the category of local column.

Batters will pick up two additional awards.

One of Batters’ awards is in the category of sports column.

His second award is in the category of sports photos for a photo titled, “Irish Win.”

“On Aug. 15, Tom and I marked our first anniversary in our respective new positions at the Times-Observer. To see our hard work honored with six awards is very gratifying,” Bartels said.

Batters added, “I have thoroughly enjoyed covering high school sports since we started our sports section last year. I put a lot of hard work into the sports section each week, and I am honored to receive this recognition.”

The five newspapers making up Times Newspapers picked up a total of 12 awards in the contest.
