Diabetes walk coming up in Peoria
Ava Berghoff, 6, of Germantown Hills on Oct. 2 will don a light blue T-shirt and head for Glen Oak Park in Peoria.
At 1 p.m. she will join others wearing T-shirts bearing the words “Berghoff’s Bunch” to walk in the Ron Santo Walk to Cure Diabetes. The goal is to raise funds and awareness of diabetes research.
“Our goal is to raise $5,000 as a team, Ava’s father, Todd, said. “We’ve been pretty active.”
In four years the Berghoff’s have raised $20,000. But, as important as fundraising, Todd said, is raising awareness.
“For us that day is a support mechanism for Ava,” Todd said. “Ava sees she has a lot of support. Long-term the funds raised go to a wonderful cause.”
This is not just a cause, Todd said. It is a situation the entire family lives with daily.
“It does not impact just one person in the family. What we are is a diabetic family. It changed the diet of all of us. As far as parenting it’s another item to manage. We have to watch her closely,” Todd said. “She goes along with what she has to do. It’s all she’s ever known. She has an older brother. He’s eight. He’s always looking out for her.”
